Facebook/Instagram Flatters TikTok

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Or perhaps in the case of Facebook/Instagram, it’s the easiest way to prevent losing users to other social media apps. Instagram has released a new feature that allows users to create a 15-second lip-syncing clip. It’s called Reels and is exclusive to Brazil for now – probably a test before an international rollout.

How To Use Reels

All you need to do is go to Story mode on Instagram. Reels is one of the options available at the bottom of the screen. The music video can be sent to either close friends or all your followers, just like any of the other stories. This option to keep the music video within a private group is one of the benefits of using Reels instead of TikTok.

TikTok Growth

It’s no surprise that Facebook/Instagram is jumping on the TikTok train. In the three years since its launch, TikTok has amassed 500 million users. This statistic alone makes it more accessible than Twitter and Snapchat. TikTok gained 188 million users so far in 2019, making it the year’s third most downloaded app.

Instagram hasn’t announced when Reels will be unveiled to everyone beyond Brazil, so stay tuned!
