Wyzant is a virtual classroom-based learning system that has been advertised and sold as a system that can make learning easier for students. It is advertised as being “Everything Your Public or Private School Didn’t Have” and providing “an online learning experience you can easily manage.” However, it turns out that Wyzant reviews reveal that there are problems with the system that contribute to its failing grades.
Some of the problems with Wyzant that students have been even more severe than the shortcomings listed above. One student posted his frustration in an online discussion about Wyzant, stating, “Wyzant is not a good course for kids my age.” This one comment highlights the fact that not only are students parents, and teachers facing frustration but that the system that is supposed to improve their education is undermining their efforts. And the real problem is that the problem does not seem to be fixed. “Just don’t buy it, buy it and stop wasting your money,” another student stated, addressing Wyzant review comments.
Several other students, parents, and teachers also reported a lack of support for teachers who find that they are having difficulties with the grading of students who enrol in Wyzant. One teacher in Massachusetts explained his frustration to a reviewer, writing, “I think Wyzant could be a killer. The tutorial is poor, and the support for teachers is not good enough. I need help with PDF assignments. I feel like I’m getting the run around for a good teaching job.”
One reviewer pointed out that the Web site’s survey of instructors indicated that many of them are having difficulty grading Wyzant students because of the system’s difficulty in tracking progress. Parents and students have also raised questions about how important the system is to get a college degree and, thus, how it can be relied upon to produce the results expected by the public.
“I need a percentage of my grade handed into the college by Friday so I can start getting on track,” one teacher stated. A high school guidance counsellor said, “I think students will notice a difference in how they perform if they do not start to use the paper grade that the teacher writes on the board to mark progress.”
In sum, Wyzant has received a “thumbs down” rating from several different students, parents, and teachers. This seems to suggest that Wyzant is not improving student achievement and that teachers are having difficulty in getting students to adhere to the rules, especially when this is the result of making the grade page challenging to navigate.
These are among the reasons why students are choosing instead to read books rather than purchase textbooks that colleges require of their students. It seems that at least some instructors are finding themselves less useful in the classroom and, thus, struggling to keep up with the expectations of parents, schools, and colleges.
